The 2014 New York Mets Finished In Second Place!

…Sure, they were tied with the Braves, but still…

THE 2014 NEW YORK METS FINISHED IN SECOND PLACE!

…Admitttedly, they were four games below .500; nevertheless…

THE 2014 NEW YORK METS FINISHED IN SECOND PLACE!

Yes, yes, they were 17 games behind the first place Nationals, however when all is said and done, one cannot deny that…

THE 2014 NEW YORK METS FINISHED IN SECOND PLACE!

To celebrate this accomplishment I’m going to share a custom “Promo card” for the upcoming TSR Hot Stove set, featuring Juan Lagares, one of my favorite current Mets.

2014-15 TSR Hot Stove P-1 Juan Lagares

As many of you are aware, these customs are based on the 1974 Kellogg’s set.  I made a tweak or two to the template since the previous two “proof of concept” customs I’ve unveiled over the past two months.

After my two prior Kellogg’s customs, Warren Zvon from Mets Baseball Cards Like They Ought To Be! – a fine read for Mets fans, custom fans or pretty much anybody – suggested using a side-to-side motion blur on the background, as he did on his Kellogg’s customs.  I have to say, it does a nice job of selling the faux 3-D.  Thanks, Warren!

I also decided to stick with the traditional Kellogg’s design, rather than adding the first name like I’d been playing with.

Once the off-season trades, signings and managerial hirings begin – none of which are supposed to be announced before the end of the World Series – then you’ll start to see more of these.

In conclusion, I would like to wrap up by saying that…

  1. I love the Juan Lagares custom. I’m less excited about the second place finish, considering it was achieved with 79 wins… that just means the division stunk this year. But I’m happy with the progress that some of the Mets players made and hopefully next year will be a different story.

  2. Congrats. The Mets are mediocre! Yea! The Cubs also finished 17 games back. Yes it was in last place but, 17 games back! Yea! And a shoutout to the Astros fans. The Astros didn’t lose 100 games this year! Yea! Next season, division wins for all of us! Don’t be mad. You know I love ya, man.

  3. Excellent card! Thanks for the shout out :) I wasn’t sure I knew what I was talking about until I saw your Lags. Wow, that’s better than any I’ve made. Great job.

I expected a 3rd place team (or worse), as I have for the last 42 out of 52 years, and their record is right about there, but they still got 2nd place. Sure, other teams had to suck but that’s baseball. I’ll brag about 2nd place all winter :)
Next year I have much higher expectations. Mo-Jo risin’ in 2015!
